There has been positive financial backing to improve the national issue of energy-deficient housing across the UK following Chancellor Rishi Sunak statement that vouchers of up to £10,000 will be provided for projects in England, e.g. insulation, as part of a £2bn Green Homes Grant.

So what is the Green Homes Grant?

It’s reported that home owners and households across England could receive up to £10,000 in grants towards energy improvements, such as insulation, double glazing and more. Not only will this positively impact on the energy-deficiency of UK homes, but could save households an estimated £600 annually on energy bills. Currently, the Green Homes Grant scheme is due to launch in September 2020, with additional plans discussed to include a £3bn plan to cut carbon emissions.

Approximately one-third of the UK’s carbon emissions is due to poorly insulated houses having to ramp up their heating in order to stay warm; especially during winter months and draughts.

Furthermore, one of the aspects that we can provide personally is energy efficient lighting. This is included in the grant and ensures that you can have the same lighting quality but with a reduced impact on the environment.

In 2019, the UK government declared a climate emergency. Research suggested that summers with temperatures above 35°C  are likely to occur almost every other year in the high emission scenario by 2100; with death by heat wave increasing every year in the UK. Therefore, it was unsurprising when the UK became the first major economy in the world to pass laws to end its contribution to global warming by 2050; with a target to have zero emissions by 2050. Such a target is arguably responsible for the Green Homes Grant and other energy-saving initiatives to follow in the coming years.

At GK Electrical Contractors we take our role in the industry and impact it has on the environment very seriously.
